#15. – SaGa
# of Good Games in the Franchise: 8
Active: Yes
SaGa started out on the original Game Boy with three installments. From here it moved to the Super Famicom with an additional trio of games. Things slowed down a bit from here. On the Sony PlayStation Squaresoft released two SaGa Frontier titles, and on the PS2 we had only one original game. The next iteration came out only on the PlayStation Vita. Recently Square-Enix has been releasing enhanced versions of the early titles otherwise this franchise would be dead.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the SaGa franchise. It’s like a weird version of Final Fantasy with intense customization options. The games are unforgiving if you make the wrong choices or don’t fully understand the mechanics in play. SaGa 1-3 on the Game Boy (released as Final Fantasy Legend) are incredible. Because of how customizable they are these are highly replayable titles. The Romancing SaGa series offer less options, but are classic JRPGs through and through. SaGa Frontier one and two are kind of a misstep but still quite good. The later installments are a bit too weird and lose focus but they’re still entertaining diversions.
The Best Way To Play:
Final Fantasy Legend 1-3 have been released in an amazing package for the Nintendo Switch. These feature some great quality of life enhancements (such as increased movement speed) which make them playable even for modern genre fans. The games are great, and should be played, and this is the best way to do so. The original Romancing SaGa was remade for the PS2 but I recommend going with a fan translation for the Super Famicom instead. Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 have been released in enhance form for all modern platforms and should be experienced there. The same goes for the original SaGa Frontier which actually has additional content. These games are absolutely worth playing so please do so because if you searched out this list you’ll probably like them.

Great list I do agree with DQ being #1 though not with MOther series being that high. The real reason Square Enix cant mess the DQ franchise is because they dont own it, I didnt know that until recently, Yuji Horii and Armor Project is the real owner of the IP
