The Sega Saturn logo. The Sega Saturn console with one controller attached.

Sega of Japan let the success from their Sega Genesis console go to their head a bit.  After the ill-conceived 32X add-on Sega launched the 32-bit Saturn console. Thing is, they gave it a surprise launch in North America leaving third parties confused, gamers uninterested, and it had a high price tag. First of all the focus was on 2D gaming with 3D hardware being an afterthought. The looming PlayStation and Nintendo 64 consoles had the majority of the mindshare in the market and Sega just wasn’t as cool as they once were. That doesn’t mean the console didn’t amass an amazing library, but a lot of the best stuff was left in Japan. This was a major nail in the coffin for Sega.
