Sony was on top of the world in the home console market. No other company had managed to overtake Nintendo in handhelds, but Sony was in a great position to try. This is where the PSP was born. It featured graphical fidelity that was surprisingly close to home consoles at the time, and was nothing that we had ever seen in the portable space. Additionally it had a focus on media. The unit could play music, movies, and various companies even released their blockbuster hits in UMD format to be played on the handheld. It was a resounding success worldwide, but still couldn’t manage to overtake Nintendo. All of the big third parties threw a ton of support behind it allowing this powerhouse of a handheld to attain a gigantic library. To this day many fans claim this is the best handheld of all time, and it’s easy to see their points in support of this.
