#6. – Quintet Trilogy

# of Good Games in the Franchise: 3

Active: No

Quintet was a developer under the wing of Enix during the 16/32-bit eras. They released action RPGs almost exclusively which are tied together only thematically. While not a proper franchise these games share enough elements that they’re generally considered to belong to a singular series. The first one was Soul Blazer for the Super Nintendo. In this title you play as a warrior sent from god to restore the land after a demon named Deathtoll has captured all living things. Next up is Illusion of Gaia wherein you play as a youth attempting to track down his dad in an adventure spanning old Earth. Finally there’s Terranigma. In this title you restore the planet Earth by releasing continents, animals, and people from entrapment.

Soul Blazer was one of the first action RPGs I ever played and I fell in love with it immediately. The haunting themes and atmosphere really drew me in. I also loved the combat system and emphasis on using different swords situationally. Illusion of Gaia has some of the best dungeon designs of any action RPG. I also loved the story and it’s emphasis on pure adventure. Terranigma has the best combat of the three, and it’s setting is really unique being based on the actual Earth with it’s civilizations and continents. All three of the games are an absolute blast to play and will stick with you long after completion.

The Best Way to Play:

This is one of those series that has never been re-released. When the Game Boy Advance was released I had high hopes that Enix would remake these titles. Unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be. As such you can only find them on the Super Nintendo. Terranigma in particular was never released in North America but was translated into English for a European release. Unfortunately you can’t play this on an unmodified Super Nintendo so I recommend getting it on a reproduction cartridge.

Lifelong gamer and movie addict. I started playing with the original Nintendo but quickly fell in love with the arcades as well! It was the SNES that really cemented this as a long term hobby and the rest is history! I'm a former writer at the website Epinions.com and started this blog as a response to that closing down. I have a lot of retro video game knowledge and wanted to share it. That's where you all come in!

  1. Great list I do agree with DQ being #1 though not with MOther series being that high. The real reason Square Enix cant mess the DQ franchise is because they dont own it, I didnt know that until recently, Yuji Horii and Armor Project is the real owner of the IP
