The PlayStation was born out of a botched deal between Nintendo and Sony to create an add-on for the Super Nintendo that made use of the new CD format. Nintendo backed out at the last minute and Sony kept the idea going and designed a new console for the next generation. Little did anyone know they were on to something big. The PlayStation took the market by storm and absolutely dominated in every market thanks to huge third party games. They displaced Sega in the market and ate up a lot of Nintendo’s market share. This started the era of the PlayStation which still continues today.
