Sega was mostly an arcade company until they released the Sega Master System. Unfortunately this faced huge competition from the Nintendo Entertainment System and never caught on. Sega decided to enter the 16-bit market before the competition with the Sega Genesis, and they leveraged their knowledge of arcade software to make it a hit. This was the market leader for a number of years but was eventually overtaken by the Super Nintendo. This was the period where Sega carved out a large part of their identity. They created Sonic the Hedgehog as an answer to Mario, and many other original home console games as well. The Sega Genesis is considered by many to be the greatest console of all time and I’m a huge fan.
