The Sega 32X was born out of Sega’s obsession with add-on hardware. While developing their next generation system, the Saturn, Sega saw it fit to give Genesis owners a cheaper alternative. This was the 32X. It could be plugged into the top of the console and played specially designed 32-bit games. The problem was that, after the Sega CD, gamers had already expressed disinterest in add-ons. Only a few games were ever released, and most were rushed to the market or enhanced versions of pre-existing software. It just wasn’t meant to be.
