When Sega finally got some real worldwide traction in the home console market they decided that they wanted more. They released a myriad of add-ons for their successful Genesis console, and a handheld unit meant to compete with the Game Boy. This was the Sega Game Gear, and it was based on the same architecture used by the Sega Master System. It was more powerful than the Nintendo alternative, and had a colored backlit screen. Unfortunately it ate batteries like they were going out of style, and ultimately the Game Gear just couldn’t compete.
